First Time in Rhode Island?
…You might need some help translating:
- Quoahog = Large clam
- Grinder = Sandwich..most often filled with italian cold cuts
- Wicked= Used as an adverb in place of “very”
- Extra Extra = More cream & more sugar, in your iced coffee…at Dunkin Donuts
- Hot Weiner = Essentially its a hotdog, but made with passion. If you find yourself on Thames street in Newport, try Wally’s Weiners, it's a local treasure.
- Steamers = Soft shell steamed clams
- Jimmies = Sprinkles (used to top ice cream)
Local Foods to Try
- Stuffies: Picture a large quahog clam shell generously “stuffed” with a flavorful mix of chopped clams, savory breadcrumbs, onion, celery, herbs and spices. This savory mixture is most often enjoyed as an appetizer and is baked to perfection, served in a halfshell, creating a crispy, golden-brown exterior and a rich, flavorful interior. Any Rhode Islander will tell you, “Ya gotta try a stuffie, yagotta” … We like “Portuguese Style” the best!
- Clam Cakes & Chowder: This dish offers a taste of coastal comfort that's hard to beat. Clam Cakes are golden-fried fritters, crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside, packed with tender, briny clams. When paired with a creamy, classic NE chowder, there’s nothing like it! Is it good for you? No, but is it worth it? Definitely!!
- Del’s Lemonade: Don't miss out on trying Del’s Lemonade! This soft, frozen lemonade is an absolute delight on a scorching summer day. Pro tip: Reduce single-use plastic and avoid standing out as a tourist by skipping the straw!
- Party Pizza (Pizza Strip): Strips of thick crust topped with a rich, slightly sweet tomato sauce without cheese, served at room temperature, dont roll your eyes until you’ve tried it…it's wicked good!
- Lobster Roll: A summer trip to New England isn't truly complete without indulging in a classic lobster roll, which always tastes best when savored by the seaside.
